Why Petrochemicals

Why Petrochemicals

Bangladesh has a substantial high quality gas reserve in the eastern part of the county. High quality (about 93 – 99%) methane gas, negligible amount of higher hydrocarbon and other impurities like hydrogen sulfate, carbon-di-oxide etc. is obtained from different gas fields in Bangladesh which supplies about 30% of the total commercial energy needs. At present except two, which are operated by IOC’s all the gas fields in the county are operated by different companies of Petrobangla (statuary corporation) which is governed by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Government of Bangladesh. It is estimated that minimum growth rate of about 10% per annum in gas production will be required to meet the average GDP growth target of 7% per annum.

Considering above facts installation of a 1700 bb/ day capacity catalytic reforming unit is planned. The main objective of the project is to install a 1700 bb/day capacity CRU with same capacity MS/Naphtha Hydro treating Unit to convert the produced petrol to Octane in order to save the valuable foreign currency by avoiding import of Octane every year.

It is assumed that the process of petrol conversion will be 70% of Octane, 5% LPG and 25% Diesel. This Octane, LPG and Diesel will be marketed through the oil marketing companies of BPC. The produced products will be used in electricity generation, irrigation, industrial and domestic purpose which will contribute to national income. It will help to maintain the macro-economic stability through facilitating poverty aviation. In this aspect project will be economically viable.
